Matching and network effects∗

چکیده
Individuals form teams to produce an output. The quality and quantity of a team’s output depends on the ability and the effort level of its members. The ability of individuals as well as their work ethic is however imperfectly known. In such an environment, individuals wishing to form a new team can get information about each other from the network of past collaborators. The paper carries out an empirical examination of the existence and magnitude of this network effect. This empirical work looks at the formation of coauthor relations among economists over a twenty year period. Our principal finding is that a new collaboration emerges faster among two researchers if they are “closer” in the existing coauthor network among economists. This proximity effect on collaboration is strong and robust but only affects new collaboration: it has no effect on subsequent collaboration among the two individuals. Thus the coauthor network acts as a “referral” mechanism among economists. ∗A previous version of this paper was circulated under the title, Scientific Networks and Coauthorship. On the inverse maximum perfect matching problem under the bottleneck-type Hamming distance
Given an undirected network G(V,A,c) and a perfect matching M of G, the inverse maximum perfect matching problem consists of modifying minimally the elements of c so that M becomes a maximum perfect matching with respect to the modified vector. In this article, we consider the inverse problem when the modifications are measured by the weighted bottleneck-type Hamming distance. We propose an alg...
متن کاملColor Matching of Blends Prepared From Black and White Fibers by Neural Networks (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The color of the blends of pre-colored fibers depends on the ratio of each fiber in the blends. Some theories have been introduced for color matching of blends of pre-colored fibers. Most however, are restricted in scope and accuracy. Kubelka and Munk presented the most applicable theory, which is still used in industry. In this work, the classical Kubelka-Munk method for color prediction of a ...
متن کاملImprovement and parallelization of Snort network intrusion detection mechanism using graphics processing unit
Nowadays, Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) are widely used to provide full security on computer networks. IDS are categorized into two primary types, including signature-based systems and anomaly-based systems. The former is more commonly used than the latter due to its lower error rate. The core of a signature-based IDS is the pattern matching. This process is inherently a computatio...

متن کاملA Fully Integrated Approach for Better Determination of Fracture Parameters Using Streamline Simulation; A gas condensate reservoir case study in Iran
Many large oil and gas fields in the most productive world regions happen to be fractured. The exploration and development of these reservoirs is a true challenge for many operators. These difficulties are due to uncertainties in geological fracture properties such as aperture, length, connectivity and intensity distribution. To successfully address these challenges, it is paramount to im...
متن کاملPeer Effects and Stability in Matching Markets
Many-to-one matching markets exist in numerous different forms, such as college admissions, matching medical interns to hospitals for residencies, assigning housing to college students, and the classic firms and workers market. In all these markets, externalities such as complementarities and peer effects severely complicate the preference ordering of each agent. Further, research has shown tha...
